28th November was the occasion
for this year's Senior Speech
Day, and despite a bitterly cold
night, there was a full Spencer
Briggs Hall to hear Mr. Boocock,
the Chairman of the
Governors,make his opening
remarks. As usual
the Headmaster, Mr. J.C.S.Weeks,
gave his report of the School
year. Although he admitted it had
been a difficult year, Mr. Weeks
was able to give a very
impressive list of not only
School successes but also of the
ever-widening range of School
activities. He mentioned in
particular the successes of the
newly-founded Orienteering
Society. The Headmaster took the
opportunity of having the Chief
Education Officer for Lancashire
present, to mention the poor
state of the old School
buildings, particularly in the
sixth-form centre.
Having
presented the prizes, Mr.
J.S.B.Boyce then delivered his
address. He revealed immediately
that,as a schoolboy,he had once
fallen asleep during a
prize-giving ceremony. He
congratulated the School on its
successes and the extent of its
activities. He suggested that,
despite many difficulties, the
future for education was rosy. He
closed his address with a plea
for toleration and understanding
between the generations.
A
vote of thanks was proposed for
Mr. Boyce by Mr. Bannister of the
B.I.C.C. It was seconded by the
Head Prefect, W.D.Rogers who,
after presenting Mr.Boyce with a
memento of his visit, requested
the usual half-day holiday for
the School, adding quickly that
this should not take into account
the recent teachers'strike.
Two
musical interludes were provided
during the evening; first a Ravel
piano piece played by Nigel
Reeve; second a Brahms Clarinet
Sonata performed by Mr. E.F.Kirk
on clarinet and George Wood on
piano.
The
evening was closed by a short
speech of thanks to all concerned
by the Chairman of the Governors.
