DEBATING SOCIETY Committee : Brereton, J.

Regular meetings
of the Society were held throughout the winter
months, everyone enjoying the varied activities.
At the General Business Meeting it was decided
that the constitution of the Society should be
the, same as last year and nineteen voting members
were created. This number grew throughout the
season until at the close there were twenty-five
voting members. Although there was a slight
increase in numbers during the season the
attendance at the meetings was disappointing for
a s,chool of our size. We appeal to all boys to
attend the meetings of the Society, for
experience gained in school societies is
extremely useful in outside activities.
Yet another new
feature was added to the already long list of the
Society's activities, a poetry reading session. A
session of humorous verse was held when poems by
Thomas Hood, W. S. Gilbert, Moore Marriott and
others were read by members of the Society. We
hope sincerely that this type of activity will
grow and that some day a session of original
verse will be held. The usual programme of
Discussions, Balloon Debates and Debates was
carried through, such subjects as "The Atom
Bomb," "The Father Christmas
Legend" and "Co--education " being
discussed and debated.
Although the
attendance at the meetings was disappointing, the
quality of the speeches both from the platform
and from the floor of the House was exceptionally
good.
We are very
pleased to welcome back into our midst Mr. Smith,
who, after having been absent in His Majesty's
Forces for some years, will no doubt have many
interesting experiences to place at the disposal
of the Society.
As last year we
would like to add a word of thanks to the
Chairman and the Committee for their very active
support during the season. If it had not been for
their help and unfailing devotion the meetings
would not have been the success they were.

The Society has
had quite a successful and enjoyable season as
regards both its own meetings and outdoor
concerts.
Five pianists,
Davis, Gilroy, Hayes, Rogerson, Waine, and one
violinist, Orme, have played solos at Society
meetings, which are held on alternate Thursdays
during the Autumn and Spring Terms. Rogerson and
Waine have continued to play at Morning Assembly,
and Gilroy has broadcast on the B.C.C. "
Northern Children's Hour." " The
Gilbert and Sullivan Operas," was the
subject of a very entertaining lecture given to
the society by Mr. Leigh, whose rendering of
certain well-known Gilbert and Sullivan passages
was an added pleasure. Rogerson also gave an
interesting lecture on Beethoven. The number of
Philharmonic Concerts attended was six, a figure
contrasting favourably with last year's two. Once
more we are greatly indebted to Messrs. James
Smith and Son, of Liverpool, for arranging a
school pianoforte recital. On this occasion we
had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Douglas Miller,
whose recital was much appreciated by all
present.
Next term it is proposed to form a violin class,
and all boys who are interested will be invited
to join. Perhaps, one day, the School may aspire
to its own orchestra.
