| In
December 1969 we were very sorry
to lose Mr. Ewart Heywood, who
retired after twenty-three years'
service as English and Careers
master. Elsewhere in the magazine
there appears an appreciation of
his dedication and hard work. We
all hope that he will enjoy
better health in his retirement. During
the year Mr.W.Evans and
Mr.I.R.Holland left to become
Heads of Department at Aigburth
Vale High School and Bolton
C.G.S. respectively.
In
July, after ten years in the
Geography Department,
Mr.J.E.Mountford left to become
Sixth Form tutor at Birkenhead
Institute. His contribution to
school life has been outstanding,
and many boys in particular will
thank him for the introduction to
Europe on his splendid summer
tours. We also regret the loss of
Mr .J .P .Marsh and Mr
.C.Richardson, both after five
years at P.G.S., both to become
Heads of Department, Mr.Marsh at
Hutton Grammar School, Mr.
Richardson at Culcheth
Comprehensive. Both will be
remembered for their wide range
of interests and activities,
especially on the games field,
and this excellent magazine is in
itself a mark of Mr .Marsh's
initiative and imagination.
Mrs.Kearle
and Mr.Poole also left at the end
of the year.
As
a result of these changes
Mr.W.Rimmer becomes Careers
master, and Mr.J.H. Thomas takes
over the editorship of the
magazine.
During
the year Mrs.M.Williams, Miss
B.McQueen, Mr.G.Dean and
Mr.I.Chadwick filled temporary
vacancies and we are grateful for
their help. Mrs.Williams will
continue in a part time capacity
next year in the English
department.
In
September we welcome :
Mr.V.Brennan
( Trinity and All Saints, Leeds )
to teach French.
Mr.P.Fairhurst ( B.A., Leeds ) to
teach English.
Mr.C.Freestone ( Loughborough
College ) to teach Technical
Subjects.
Mr.N.Harris ( B.Ed., Liverpool )
to teach Mathematics.
Mrs.M.B.Harris ( F.R.I.C.,
Salford ) to teach Mathematics
and Chemistry.
Mr.D.Kirk ( B.Sc., Liverpool ) to
teach Physics.
Mr.W.Lonsdale ( B.A., Leeds ) to
teach Classics.
Mr.P.McBride ( B.A., Leicester )
to teach Geography.
In
addition to Mr.Heywood's illness
in the Autumn Term, both Mr
.Elmer and Mr. Fred Webster have
been seriously ill, and we are
very glad to see their full
recovery.
The
Head Prefect for the Autumn Term
was William Rogers and for the
Spring and Summer Terms Steven
Jones. The Upper Sixth shared the
responsibilities of prefectship.
The
major academic achievement of the
year has been that of Graham
Birchenough, who won an
Exhibition in Modern Languages at
Brasenose College, Oxford.
W.Rogers and D.Mercer gained
places at St-Catherine's College,
Cambridge and Hertford College,
Oxford.
The
most important development of the
year has been at White Hart
House, Dent. The alterations are
now complete, and staff and boys
were in occupation during the
Summer Term. A very successful
Open Day was held on July 5>
when over three hundred parents
visited Dent.
The
usual school functions were held.
I recall particularly Mr.Boyce's
fine address at Speech Day, the
stimulating performances of
Romanof and Juliet, and the
national publicity the production
received, and the three concerts.
We have abandoned awarding prizes
below the Fifth year, because the
system was inherently unfair in
that so many subject options are
now in existence, and also to
concentrate our limited financial
resources on the Senior School,
so that really worthwhile prizes
can be given.
The
School is being re-wired (at
last) over the summer holidays,
but other building developments
have been further delayed. That
great imponderable,
reorganisation, is still with us,
but no one can forecast when or
in what form it will occur.
