| The
most notable happening of this
year's Open Day was undoubtedly
Mr. Dean's target golf. This idea
vas highly popular and even Mr.
Middlehurst in his old age, had a
whack at the ball and managed to
score 15- Also on the golfing
scene, Mr. Chadwick arranged
entertainment in the form of
putting. This was highly
successful and about 50 people
went on the green. When our
correspondent arrived, the green
was full and he was told to
"come back later".
There was a Gymnastics match in
the quadrangle. The school team
played Maghull and won narrowly.
The biggest shock in this match
came when it was found that The
Maghull team included a girl, who
proceeded to cone third over all.
Clarkc of 2 Alpha had the highest
score. Early in the afternoon a
basketball match was played in
the gymnasium. The pace was so
fast and furious that even our
brilliant, mathematical
correspondent (M.S.Hughes 3
Kappa) lost track of the score.
The game vas declared a draw.
Throughout the afternoon a number
of boys competed on the school
field to gain one, two, three,
four or five stars in the Amateur
Athletics Association Star Award
Scheme. In Room
33 there was an exhibition of the
articles to be printed in the
"Prescotian", and the
methods and processes involved in
the production of the magazine.
In the centre of the exhibition
sat Miss Shaw hammering away at a
typewriter, while boys completed
illustrations, and the Art Editor
caught up on his reports. In the
library, there was an exhibition
of coins by the Numismatics!
Society, and in Room 7, there was
an exhibition of stamps by the
Philatelic Society. The first
years, under orders from Mr.
Harvey, gave some excellent
history displays in Rooms 12, 13,
14 and 15. The Commerce
Department put on a good display
of its past year's work, vith
interesting information about
retail shops in Prescot, and the
Biology Department carried out
biological] tests on as many
parents as they could bag. There
was an impressive show of Mr.
Stoddart's rocks and fossils in
Room 24.
In
the Metalwork Room, Woodwork Room
and Drawing Office several boys
vorked(?) to show what takes
place in their lessons. The
Chemistry, Russian, and French
Departments each staged a normal
lesson. Mr. Kirk, as well as
giving a Junior Orchestra concert
in the Spencer Briggs Hall, also
gave a 4th form music lesson, in
which the boys sang several
"Beatles" hit songs.
Mr. Mountford gave three
illustrated talks during the
afternoon on recent successful
School visits abroad.
All
in all. we felt that it was a
most interesting and useful day.

C. McCulley, M.S.Hughss,
