It was a very
happy team that finished this year's football
season. On the 400th Anniversary of the School's
foundation we have at last managed to gain that
long-coveted trophy, the Liverpool Secondary
Schools' Shield.

After an
extremely full and successful season's play, we
were determined to do our utmost to gain this
victory. We suffered our usual fortune in being
drawn away, in the preliminary round, to our old
rivals, St. Francis Xaviers. This, however, did
not prevent us from gaining a 2-0 victory for
which, we admit, we had to fight. In the next
round we met Holt. Our over-confidence nearly
proved our downfall, for it was this team that
gave us our hardest match : the result was again
2-0. We anticipated our third round with some
misgivings, though our determination remained
unchanged. Alsop, whom we were to meet, were
recognised as our most serious rivals, but we
surprised them somewhat with a clear 3-0 victory.
Then came the
final at Goodison Park. Liverpool Institute first
forced us to a goalless draw by an extremely
determined performance. The replay, however, left
the decision in no doubt. A stubborn defence and
a fast attack eventually gained the upper hand,
and we were the winners by four goals to nil.
(Foster 1 ; Gale 1; Jones 2). We are naturally
proud to record progress through this contest
with no goal scored against us. Success was
probably due more, to co-operative teamwork than
to any individual efforts.
