July, 1939 THE PRESCOTIAN EDITORIAL. During the present year
we have regretfully said good-bye to the Chairman
of the Governors, Canon J. P. W. Lovett, who has
left Prescot to take over a new
parishSherborne, Dorset. On behalf of our
readers we express our gratitude for many years
kindly interest in the School, and add ours to
the many expressions of goodwill that accompany
him.
The Board of
Governors has suffered another loss by the death,
on July 7th, 1939, of Col. J. T. Hopgood, of
Rainford. Col. Hopgood's interests were many and
varied, but he managed to find time to render a
good deal of quiet service to the School, and we
wish to be associated with the widespread
expressions of sympathy with his family.
We were
interested to learn that Dr. John Oldershaw, for
many years a notable public figure in Wallasey,
who died on November 7th, 1938, was educated at
Prescot Grammar School. Dr. Oldershaw went from
Prescot to Rugby and Cambridge, and studied
medicine at Edinburgh and Brussels before
practising in Liverpool.
In this year's
Birthday Honours we were pleased to note the name
of an Old Boy of the School. Mr. Frederick Haigh,
who received the M.B.E., Civil Division, for
public services, is a Staff Officer of the Board
of Inland Revenue. He was at the School about 35
years ago.
We have this
year welcomed to the Staff, Mr. J. R. Smith,
B.A., of Liverpool University.
We again appeal
for a closer contact with Old Boys, who could
lighten the editorial task by keeping us posted
of their activities and results. It would help us
considerably if Old Boys who are not members of
the Association would guarantee to take the
School magazine regularly.
H. CHANT &
G. DIXON.
