| Cricket,
1943-44. CaptainREID.
Vice-CaptainRIMMER.
This year we
have not been as successful as in past years.
Only three of last season's XI were available,
while events on the football field tended to
create an impression of anticlimax when the
cricket season arrived.
Our only success
was a handsome six-wicket win against a strong
" Engineering Cadet " side, while both
our matches with Huyton Juniors were drawn.
Victory was almost within our grasp against the
last-named team, when, with only three Huyton
wickets to fall, bad light stopped play.
The most
reliable batsman was Rimmer ; Ewing, Gale, Reid
and Stephenson made useful scores occasionally,
though they were rather inconsistent ; Griffiths
showed promise as an opening batsman.
We found a
splendid bowler in Ames ; by keeping an
exceptionally accurate length he captured 40
wickets. Critchley and Gale bowled well on
occasions.
Some of the
eleven proved very capable in the field, but the
standard was not maintained throughout the team.
Regular members of the team were Ewing,
Stephenson, Gale, Rimmer, Reid, Griffiths,
Poulson, Miller, Critchley, Orford and Ames.
Atherton, Court, Foster, Holt, Smith and Vaughan
also played. Colours were awarded to Reid,
Rimmer, Ames, Gale and Ewing (re-awarded). The
second XI proved quite formidable, winning three
out of their four games.
